What Are The Different Types Of Touch Screen Technology?

A touch screen or a capacitive touch screen is an assembly of a display device and an input device. The touch screen is typically layered over an integrated light-sensing device of an electronic display system. While the latter system is often a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop, the touch screen can also be a desktop computer monitor. Capacitive touch screen technologies provide a natural interface for performing all kinds of computing tasks.

This type of interface utilizes one or more electrodes that are electrically active when a finger touches the screen. These electrodes are called conductors and they form a virtual grid on the touch screen. When a finger interacts with the grid, the electrical current produced by the finger’s action causes this virtual grid to change in shape. In effect, it translates to the generation of a virtual electric field that grips the finger and changes the shape of the corresponding area on the screen.

What makes touch screen technology particularly exciting is that the physical response it generates is not limited to just finger interaction. One of the major challenges that touch screen devices face is providing a consistently high signal to the screen so that your finger is still able to operate the device without experiencing some unwanted disturbances. To overcome this problem, touch screen systems typically employ what is known as an acoustic waveguider. Acoustic waveguiders are specialized transducers that couple the motion of a finger to the surface of the screen and change the resulting signal into a digital signal. The resistive touch screen works in the same way as the capacitive screen where the energy that is transferred is a change in the charge of the paint. Capacitive touch screens on the other hand work by receiving light impulses from the device and registering these light impulses with the screen to convert them into actual voltage signals.
